Ocean Beach, or “OB” as it is popularly known, is the beachfront neighborhood in the city of San Diego. Ocean Beach is about 7 miles north of Downtown San Diego, south of Mission Bay and Mission Beach, and just north of Point Loma. The place is uniquely situated in the sense that is bound on the west by the Pacific Ocean and on the north by the San Diego river making it a wonderful spot for tourists.
Newport Avenue is the neighborhood’s palm tree lined, iconic retail center with ample shopping, local restaurants and bars with incredible ocean views and unique coastal cuisines.
At the northernmost end of the Ocean Beach is the Dog Beach, an exclusive off-leash beach for dog lovers who can bring their pets for long walks and a bit of swim too.
One of the highlights of Ocean Beach is the Ocean Beach Municipal Pier that sets out into the sea. It is at the south end of the beach extending over the waves while providing an amazing view of the Pacific Ocean and the coast. A unique thing about the pier is that it is one of the few places where visitors can fish without a California fishing license. A tackle shop in the middle of the pier helps fishing enthusiasts rent baits, poles, and other fishing equipment. It is also the longest concrete pier on the West Coast.
Tucked away from the Pacific coast towards the east is the Point Loma Native Plant Garden just at the corner of Ocean Beach. The garden is very close to the Collier’s Neighborhood Park and hosts the San Diego’s native ecology. The garden was set up with efforts of Point Loma Garden Club, California Native Plant Society, and some community members during the 80s. It is a must-visit destination for all enthusiasts of flora.
